Cooling curve analyses may be performed with three possible objectives. One is for routine quality control using laboratory samples. Another is to characterize a commercial quench system and to build a long term database for simulation of expected as-quenched and quenched and tempered properties for the particular steels and chemistries used by the heat treater. The third method is to develop heat transfer coefficients for subsequent numerical modeling and process simulation work.
