Cooling Curve Analysis Supplies

Wolfson Test Probe

The international standard test probe used for cooling curve analysis, commonly known as the "Wolfson Probe", is a 12.5 dia. x 60 mm cylindrical INCONEL 600 specimen with a Type K thermocouple inserted to the geometric center. Test probes utilize a thermocouple connection according to the standard IEC 584.3 (replacing NF C 42-324, DIN 43714, BS 1843 and ANSI MC 96.1). This standardized probe is welded to a hollow "handle" of various lengths depending on the dimensional requirements for the cooling curve measuring device where it will be used.

Current standards requiring the use of the Wolfson probe include: ISO 9950 and ASTM D 6200, D 6482 and D 6549.

1.) Test probes in 400, 600 and 1000 mm (shown in Figure 1) are standard but any length can be delivered upon request.

2.) Standard test probes fit both the IVF Quenchotest and Drayton Quench master are available.

JIS K 2242 Silver Probe

The JIS K 2242 standard probe is most commonly used in Japan and some other Asian countries. This probe is available from G.E. Totten & Associates, LLC.

Custom Probe Manufacture

Custom probes of any material and dimension can be delivered upon request. Some alternative test probe designs are summarized in Table 1. However, probes of any dimensions, configurations, alloy, and thermocouple arrangements can be constructed.

TENSI Agitation Unit

Cooling curve analysis of aqueous polymer quenchants must be conducted using agitation. G.E. Totten & Associates, LLC. offers the Tensi agitation unit which was standardized according to ASTM D 6549 "Standard Method for Cooling Curve Analysis of Aqueous Polymer Quenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis with Agitation (Tensi Method)" (standard is available on-line from ASTM).

Reference Oil

The physical property requirements for the reference oil to be used with ISO 9950 are summarized in Table 2. This reference oil and certification is available from G.E. Totten & Associates, LLC.
